I never planned to own property in Mexico.
But in 2024, after a trip that started as a long weekend and turned into two weeks, something clicked. The jungle. The cenotes. The way time moved differently there.
Alie and I found ourselves returning to the same spot—a quiet corner of Tulum away from the party scene. A place where you could hear yourself think.
So we bought a condo.
The spot
It’s in Samsara, a boutique resort in Tulum’s hotel zone. Not the beach party chaos, not the touristy strip. Just jungle paths, multiple pools, and the kind of quiet that makes you wonder why you live in a city.
The unit itself is nothing fancy—two bedrooms, two baths, a kitchen, and a balcony that looks out into green. But it’s ours. A place we can escape to, and a place we can share.
Why I’m writing this
Friends kept asking for recommendations. “Where should we eat?” “Which cenotes are actually worth it?” “What’s the deal with the beach clubs?”
I found myself sending the same long texts over and over.
So I built a guide.
Tulum Vista is everything I tell people when they visit. No sponsorships, no affiliate links to places I’ve never been. Just honest recommendations from someone who actually goes there.
If you’re planning a trip, start there. And if you want to stay in our place, you can book it on Airbnb.
What I’ve learned
A few things from owning property 2,000 miles away:
Property management is everything. We use Jungle Luxe, and they handle the rentals, maintenance, and guest communication. I couldn’t do this without them.
The peso is a rollercoaster. Currency fluctuations mean your costs and returns swing month to month. You have to zoom out.
It’s not an investment. At least not primarily. The rental income covers some costs, but we bought this for the lifestyle, not the returns. If you’re looking for pure ROI, buy an index fund.
But it’s worth it. Having a place that’s yours in a place you love—that’s hard to put a price on.
If you’re curious about Tulum, check out the guide I built. And if you make it there, let me know. I’ll tell you where to get the best tacos.
